American or Canadian side of Niagara Falls?

The two sides of Niagara Falls give you different things. The American side gets you close to the water; the Canadian side gives you the famous front-on view.

The American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are in New York; the Horseshoe Falls is shared by the border. From the US side you stand beside the falls and on top of them. From Canada you look straight at them.

Neither side is better for everyone. The right one depends on what you want to feel, and whether you have a passport with you.

The quick answer

Choose the American side to get close: the Maid of the Mist, the Cave of the Winds and Terrapin Point put you next to the water, and you need no passport if you are already in the US. Choose the Canadian side for the classic front-on panorama of the Horseshoe Falls. With a passport, the best day does both.

How do the American and Canadian sides compare?

The US side is about closeness and nature; the Canadian side is about the panorama and a busier town.

What can you see from the American side?

The American and Bridal Veil Falls from above and below, the edge of the Horseshoe Falls at Terrapin Point, and all three falls from the Observation Tower.

Goat Island and Luna Island put you on top of the falls, Prospect Point at the brink of the American Falls, and the Cave of the Winds at the foot of Bridal Veil Falls. What you do not get is a straight-on view of the whole Horseshoe.

What can you see from the Canadian side?

The famous front-on panorama of the Horseshoe Falls, plus the American Falls across the river.

The two-sides tour adds the Skylon Tower, Queen Victoria Park and the Floral Clock, and in the off season Journey Behind the Falls, the tunnels behind the Horseshoe Falls.

Do you need a passport to see Niagara Falls?

Not if you stay on the side you are already on; you need a passport to cross the border either way.

The all-inclusive USA side tour stays in Niagara Falls, NY, so no passport is needed. The two-sides tour requires one, and many visitors also need US or Canadian entry documents. Guests on that tour mention waits at customs.

Which side has the better boat ride?

Neither: the Maid of the Mist (US) and Niagara City Cruises (Canada) sail into the same Horseshoe Falls basin.

Take the boat on the side you are staying on. Details on the US boat are in the Maid of the Mist guide.

Can you see both sides in one day?

Yes: the two-sides tour covers the boat and the Cave of the Winds in the US and the Canadian viewpoints in about 6 hours, from $190.

It includes hotel pickup in the Niagara Falls area on either side (not Toronto or Buffalo), all admissions, bridge tolls and road fees. Food and the guide's tip are extra. Allow for border time.

Which side is better at night?

Both see the illuminated falls every night; the fireworks are launched over the gorge by Niagara Parks on the Canadian side.

In 2026 the fireworks run at 10 PM until October 12 and last about five minutes. From the US side, the evening illumination tour and the all-inclusive tour's Fireworks and Light Show option take you to see the lights.

Want the lights too? The evening tour adds the boat and the cave to the falls after dark.
